The Alaska APRN Alliance is a partnership of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (Nurse Practitioners, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Clinical Nurse Specialists).
We advocate for our patients
and our profession.
The Mission of the Alaska APRN Alliance is to provide expert advice, preserve the integrity of the APRN role, ensure current and evolving scopes of practice, and advocate for the populations we serve.
The Alaska APRN Alliance is founded on the idea that we are stronger together, and by pooling our collective resources and sharing our unique perspectives, we can advocate more effectively for our patients and our professions.
By working at the local, state, and federal levels with legislators and other stakeholders, our goal is to improve health care access and outcomes for our patients, and to ensure the continuation of independent and progressive practice regulations for APRNs in Alaska.
What is an APRN?
An APRN is a nurse with a graduate degree (Masters or Doctorate) who has been licensed in an advanced role that builds on the competencies of registered nurses (RNs). About 1900 APRNs practice throughout Alaska in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Licensure as an APRN is contingent upon completion of an accredited graduate-level education program and passage of a national certification examination.
APRNs in Alaska are licensed independent providers with full prescriptive authority.

Alaska SB 53 Advance Practice Registered Nurses was signed into statute in July 2016. This statute updated Alaska to align the APRN Consensus Model. CNP, CRNA, CNM, and CNS are all APRNs. The APRN Alliance works closely with the Alaska Board of Nursing to update all state regulations.
History

The Alliance was formed when CNS Carrie Peluso, CNM Laura Sarcone, and CRNA Chris Logan met in 2011. That was the beginning to developing the process to form an Action Coalition, sponsored by the Roberts Wood Johnson Foundation and the Institutes of Medicine for implementation of the goals of the Future of Nursing. One of the items on the agenda was the nursing scope of practice to put forth the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Advanced Practice Registered Nurse consensus model (APRN Consensus Model). The APRNs in question are the Nurse Practitioners, the Nurse Midwives, the Nurse Anesthetists, and the Clinical Nurse Specialists.
